Ode to a Window

2023
Somerville, MA

Harvard Graduate School of Design
Course led by Eric Höweler
A window used daily in the third story of a Somerville, MA home - a triplet of its South and East facing siblings. The box sash windows are original, despite a series of renovations to the home. A daily interaction with the windows, mostly raising and lowering inherited shades, move with the rhythms of the sun. At night, the satch is wiggled, adjoining the two sashes to ward off any inevitable winter draft. There is an undeniable charm to the window’s tempermental mechanics. Iron sash weights hang from a faithful rope over its hidden pulley, peeking out slightly beyond a brass plate in the sash box. The matching sash lock still neatly interlocks and the grooved wooden frame still brings each of the seven inidividual panes of glass into a careful embrace. For the sake of admiration, the window certainly encourages a widening of the notions of comfort.
